PAUL MARKS

Paul Marks, 61, of 801 W Buffalo St., died at Tompkins Community Hospital on Tuesday, Dec. 6, 1994. Mr. Marks was born in Chicago and was the son of the late Myer and Eva Marks. He attended high school in Los Angeles and attended UCLA and the University of Washington.

For many years, he toured as a professional viola player with symphony orchestras worldwide, including the Tulsa Symphony, the Israeli Philharmonic, and the Dallas Symphony Orchestras. One of his musical highlights as a young man was a personal meeting with the great Russian composer Igor Stravinsky. Mr. Marks went on to become an Assistant Professor of Music History at McGill University in Montreal.

Following his music career, Mr. Marks embarked on a career in wine, for which he had a natural affinity. During his 30 years as a wine aficionado, including 14 years in the wine trade, Mr. Marks wrote over 300 articles on wine for various publications. His training included study with the British Wine and Spirits Education Trust, from which he holds the “Diploma” (one step from Master of Wine). Mr. Marks taught wine courses at Tompkins Cortland Community College and the Boston Center for Adult Education. As an author, Paul’s book, “Gateway to Wine,” is in its third edition. Mr. Marks is survived by his cousin, Lorraine Nestroy of Phoenix, Arizona, and several relatives in England and Israel.
