--------
Charles is survived by his wife, Anita, and their four children, including the second oldest, Alejandro Mayorkas, who served as Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security in the Biden administration.
Charles was the only child of Turkish and Polish Jewish immigrants who left Europe soon after WWI and settled in Havana, Cuba, where he met Anita. Charles owned a steel-wool factory, but soon after Fidel Castro came to power, he and his family fled to Miami, where they eventually settled in Los Angeles, and he worked as a comptroller for a textile manufacturer.
His father is buried in Havana.
