Charles is survived by his wife, Anita, and their four children, including the second oldest, Alejandro Mayorkas, who served as Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security in the Biden administration.

Charles was the only child of Turkish and Polish Jewish immigrants who left Europe soon after WWI and settled in Havana, Cuba, where he met Anita. Charles owned a steel-wool factory, but soon after Fidel Castro came to power, he and his family fled to Miami, where they eventually settled in Los Angeles, and he worked as a comptroller for a textile manufacturer.

His father is buried in Havana.

Obituaries
Anita was the only child of Romanian-Jewish refugees who first fled France to escape the Nazis but then settled in Havana, Cuba. Two of her grandparents and seven of Anita's uncles were Holocaust victims.

Anita, who spoke five languages, met her husband, Charles, a European-Jewish immigrant, in Havana, where he would eventually own a steel wool factory. They had four children, the second oldest of whom is Alejandro Mayorkas, who has been the Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security in the Biden administration since 2021.

In 1960, soon after Fidel Castro came to power, the Mayorkases left for Miami, and then settled in Los Angeles, where Charles worked as a comptroller for a textile manufacturer.
