Obituaries
From Richard D. Bracken (1958-2022) - Find a Grave Memorial:

Richard D. Bracken, 64, of Leeds, ND, and Joshua Tree, CA, passed away Monday, August 29, 2022, in rural Towner County, ND. The Memorial Service will be held at 10:30 AM on Tuesday, September 6, 2022, at the Leeds Lutheran Church. Visitation will begin one hour before the service at the church. Everyone is welcome to stream the funeral service through the Nelson Funeral Home Facebook Page.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Richard’s memory to the Susan G. Komen Organization (komen.org). This is a cause he was passionate about after losing his mother to breast cancer, and his wife being a breast cancer survivor. He was always grateful for the help our family received.

Richard Bracken’s soul left this earth on Aug 29, 2022. He was 64 years young but transitioned doing what he loved, farming in Leeds, North Dakota, where he lived his entire beautiful life. He is survived by his loving wife Melody Bracken, who he has been with for 42 years, daughter Ashley Bracken and her partner Brian Barnes, daughter Amber Bracken, two siblings Steve Bracken (wife Mary) and Dawn Ahlberg (husband Mark), his dad’s wife Harriet, and 6 Chihuahua fur babies — Princess, Muffin, Penny, Lola, Rita, Frankie and his best friend Jackie. Richard also leaves behind incredible nieces and nephews, extended family, and friends.

Richard Bracken loved his family more than anything…except maybe onion rings. He met his wife in Bakersfield, CA, when he was hauling bees. Apparently, that city girl couldn’t resist his sweetness and quickly moved to North Dakota, where they had their two daughters. From the moment his two girls were born, nothing else mattered in the entire world.

Richard was so goofy with his girls and loved spending time with their friends, always teasing. He lovingly assembled doll furniture and built forts in the yard. Firewood was always chopped for the many backyard bonfires. He showed his love by acts of service for his girls.

Richard’s favorite time of the year was the holidays, not only because he loved Amber’s peanut butter kiss cookies, but because it meant an annual road trip out to Joshua Tree in his later years. He was planning to retire and move to sunny California because his home was wherever his girls were, and that was where his heart belonged.

Richard told his girls he loved them every single day. He would either call them and leave silly messages or, once he discovered the iPhone, a day wouldn’t go by without them waking up to a text saying it was a beautiful day and that he loved them. We will cherish those messages forever.

Richard is preceded in death by his mother, Beatrice Bracken, and father, Lyle Bracken. We are confident they are joyfully reconnecting.

It’s a wonderful thing to love.
