Gemini Pro Sketch
The following biographical sketch was produced using artificial intelligence and may contain mistakes.
Annetta C. Crass was born on March 15, 1880, in Sandusky, Ohio, to Martin Crass and Caroline Bauer. Her birth occurred during a period of rapid industrial growth across the United States. She completed four years of high school. By 1907, she was working as a nurse, a profession gaining greater recognition and structure in the Progressive Era. On December 3, 1907, at the age of 27, she married Edward Ernest Mittman Sr in Cuyahoga County, Ohio. Edward, born in Cleveland, Ohio, had begun his career as a YMCA secretary.
The couple had three children: Sitka Dorothy, Nadyne Marjorie, and Edward E. Mittman Jr. Sitka Dorothy died in 1914 at the age of four. By 1930, Annetta was employed as a proofreader for the Prohibition Flying Squadron Newspaper, a role that placed her within the social and political movements of the Prohibition era, an intense period of national debate and enforcement. Her husband also worked as the secretary for the same organization.
As the nation navigated the Great Depression and the subsequent post-war boom, Annetta’s primary occupations shifted to home housework in 1940 and keeping house by 1950, reflecting common roles for women of her generation. She was a former resident of Indianapolis and a member of the Meridian Heights Presbyterian Church. Annetta C. Mittman died in LaPorte County, Indiana, on December 10, 1954, at the age of 74. Her cremation followed in Chicago on December 14, 1954, with her remains interred in Oak Woods Cemetery.
Annetta was survived by her husband, Edward E. Mittman Sr., who lived until 1967. She also left behind her son, Edward E. Mittman Jr., and her daughter, Nadyne Marjorie Francis, along with four grandchildren. Her life spanned significant shifts in American society, from the late Gilded Age through the mid-20th century, marking a woman who engaged in both professional work and domestic responsibilities within her community.
