Mrs. Vilma P. Karpes, Operated Road Stand

BUDD LAKE — Mrs. Vilma P. Karpes, 71, of Route 46, died Friday at Dover General Hospital after a short illness.

Born in New Brunswick, she lived in the Paterson-Garfield area for many years before moving to the lake area in 1958.

Mrs. Karpes owned and operated a road stand on Route 46 for many years. She was a member of the Gold Star Mothers and the American Legion Auxiliary of Netcong.

The funeral will be at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday from the Feeney Funeral Home, 385 Park Ave., Paterson, followed by a 10 a.m. Mass of the Resurrection in St. Therese’s R.C. Church, Paterson. The interment will be in Calvary Cemetery, Paterson.

She leaves her husband, Ellis B.; a son, Richard H. Gutches of Wayne; two brothers, Stephen Theodore Poch of Rochelle Park and Alex Poch of Englewood, Calif.; two sisters, Mrs. Mary Silas of Bloomingdale, Ohio, and Mrs. Elizabeth Chillog of St. Clairville, Ohio; and five grandchildren.

A son, Ralph, was killed in action during World War II.

Ellis B. Karpes, 78, Retired MVD Inspector

Ellis B. Karpes, 78, of Wall Avenue and Budd Lake, died unexpectedly on Wednesday in Barnert Memorial Hospital.

Born in Brooklyn, Mr. Karpes moved to this area 20 years ago. He was a motor vehicle inspector for 25 years, retiring ten years ago.

Mr. Karpes was an Army veteran of World War I and a Navy Seabee veteran of World War II. His wife, Vilma, died in 1973.

The funeral service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Friday in the Browning-Forshay Funeral Home, 557 Lafayette Ave., Hawthorne. The interment will be in Cedar Lawn Cemetery.

He is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Arnold (Anita) Ricciardi of Paterson; a stepson, Richard Gutches of Wayne; a brother, Dr. Benjamin Karpes of Paterson; a sister, Mrs. Leah Peterson of Pompano Beach, Fla., and five grandchildren.

Donations may be made to a favorite charity.

Friends may call Thursday evening, 7-9 p.m. The family suggests that flowers be omitted and memorial donations be made to any favorite church in Mr. Karpes’ name.
