Annette Herman's life began in Chicago, Illinois, on July 13, 1924, the daughter of Harry and Tillie Herman. Growing up in the bustling city, she navigated her formative years and attended Proviso Township High School, which later became known as Proviso East High School. Her early adulthood coincided with a period of significant change and movement across the United States.
In the early 1940s, as the nation geared up for and entered World War II, Annette, then a young woman of seventeen or eighteen, found herself in Dallas, Texas. Away from her Chicago home, she crossed paths with Howard Louis Esterson, also a Chicago native, who was serving in the U.S. Air Force, training bombardiers in the Dallas area. This pivotal time saw the birth of her son, Leonard Phillip, in Chicago in December 1942. Subsequently, she was linked with Karl Benjamin Sands, an auto painter, before establishing a more settled life.
Around 1944, Annette married Sam Gottlieb in Chicago. A decade later, in December 1954, she married Harry John Sooman in Cook County, Illinois. This union brought a shared professional path, as Annette rose to become Vice President of the Manette Corporation, a company where Harry John Sooman served as President. Together, they forged a career that spanned many years.
Annette's later years were spent in Florida, where she passed away in Fort Lauderdale on July 15, 2005, at the age of 81. She was laid to rest in North Lauderdale, Florida. Her life journey, beginning in the vibrant urban landscape of Chicago and concluding in the warmth of Florida, spanned much of the 20th century, bearing witness to profound societal shifts and personal milestones.
