[3533]FATHER OF LOCAL MAN SUCCUMBS; RITES TUESDAYFuneral services for August John Mittman, 90, father of Emil Mittman, 1150 N. Highland Drive, will be held Tuesday, March 8, in Anaheim.
Mr. Mittman, who died in Anaheim on Friday, March 4, had been in failing health for the last year.
Services on Tuesday will be at 3 p.m. at Zion Lutheran Church in Anaheim, with burial in the Anaheim Cemetery. Six grandsons will be casket bearers.
Mr. Mittman was born Nov. 24, 1875, in Germany, and during his active years was a successful farmer, raising fine cattle. In 1897, he married Olga Julia Wolf, who survives him, and they resided in what is now East Germany. Of their nine children, six are living: Emil of Porterville; Paul Mittman, Mrs. Heddy Fetter, and Mrs. John Kruger, all of Anaheim; Mrs. William Kruger of Hamlen, West Germany; and Mrs. Friedrich Gelfieus of Darmstadt, West Germany. There are 26 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.
During World War II and the Hitler regime in Germany, the Mittmans were forced out of their home and had to take up residence in tenant quarters on their farm. When the Russians moved into their area, they fled to West Germany in 1945. Through the efforts of their son, Emil, they came to Anaheim in 1947 and established a new home. Mr. Mittman was a lifelong and active member of the Lutheran church. He visited his son and family here in Porterville on many occasions.
The Emil Mittmans left for Anaheim this morning. Other members of the family in this area who will attend the services on Tuesday include Mr. and Mrs. Martin Mittman of Porterville; Mr. and Mrs. Gust Mabs of Lindsay; and Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Schostag of Bakersfield.
