[4014]FORMER MINDEN MAN IS KILLEDFred J. Mittman Crushed to Death By Falling LumberBuried At Aurora, III.Had Won Rapid Promotion In the Lumber Department of BurlingtonFred J. Mittman, son of Fred Mittman of this city, was instantly killed at Custer, South Dakota, last Friday noon, when a large pile of freight car doors fell upon him.
The body was taken from Custer to Aurora, Illinois, where the funeral was held on Wednesday and burial was made in the cemetery of that city.
Mr. Mittman grew to manhood in this county, and the news of his sudden death came as a great shock to his many friends here. He was but thirty-five years of age and had an auspicious future as a railroad man.
Mr. Mittman left Minden when about twenty years old and secured a job with the Burlington Railroad at Aurora, Illinois, as a laborer in the lumber department.
His strict attention to duty and his faithful services won him promotion until he became foreman of the company’s lumber yards at Aurora. Just recently, he had been promoted to the position of district foreman in the lumber department with headquarters at Custer, South Dakota, with the lumber yards in that division in his charge.
He had lived in Aurora for the past fifteen years, coming to Minden nearly every year with his family to visit his father and other relatives and friends here. Everyone who knew him liked Fred. He had the respect and affection of those who worked under him as well as of those who were above him in the railroad service.
