[4029]West Chicago fire claims woman’s life.Fire started in the living room as she slept.
BY QUAN TRUONGTribune reporter
A 41-year-old woman died of smoke inhalation on Friday after a fire consumed a West Chicago home.
Stacey Mittman lived alone in the home in the 300 block of Harrison Street, her family said.
“The reality is hard to comprehend. We’re all still in shock,” said Kathy Stadteld, who said she is Mittman’s best friend.
Firefighters were on the scene for several hours after the fire started around noon.
West Chicago Fire Chief Bob Hodge said the cause was undetermined, although it appeared accidental.
The damage was extensive, he said, but was confined to one room.
He said he believed that the house would be salvageable.
The DuPage County Coroner’s Office said on Tuesday that Mittman’s preliminary cause of death is smoke inhalation.
Claira Mittman, who said she is the victim’s niece, said Stacey Mittman was sleeping in the bedroom when the fire started. Stadtfeld said fire officials told family and friends the blaze started in the living room.
Mittman had health issues and did not work, according to Stadtfeld.
She was an artist who liked to paint and sculpt, Claira Mittman said.
