From Charles “Mitty” Mittman (1935-2021) - Find a Grave Memorial:

Charles “Mitty” Mittman, September 14, 2021, San Diego

Dr. Charles Mittman passed away peacefully in San Diego, California, on Tuesday, September 14, 2021; he was 86 years old.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Ilene (Pavlove) Mittman, whom he met in grammar school; his four sons and their wives, Scott (Ilana), Brian (Debbie), Jeffrey, and David (Felice), as well as seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

"Mitty,” as he was known to his friends, was born in Chicago, Illinois, and moved to Arcadia, California, in 1966 with Ilene and their four boys.

He began his medical career as a graduate of the University of Chicago Medical School. He served in the U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps in Baltimore, Maryland, in the early 1960s.

Charles continued his pulmonary research and clinical work at the City of Hope in Duarte, California, eventually becoming the Executive Medical Director.

After moving to Fresno in 1987, Charles served as the President of the Central California Faculty Medical Group, whose membership consisted of physicians associated with the University of California, San Francisco.

In 1993, after moving to La Jolla, Charles became Dean for Clinical Affairs at the University of California San Diego Medical School. He retired as UCSD Health Service's Director of Corporate Compliance.

Charles loved to travel, a passion he shared with his wife and extended family. He was also an accomplished amateur photographer; his award-winning photos appeared in newspapers, magazines, and travel books.

Charles, along with Ilene, was devoted to the San Diego philanthropic and cultural communities. Those interested in donating in his memory may do so to the Jewish Family Service of San Diego.
