Born into the bustling city of Chicago, Illinois, on June 11, 1935, Charles Mittman was a man destined for a life of purpose and profound contribution. The son of Bernard Mittman and Sylvia Klang, Charles, affectionately known to his friends as "Mitty," began his remarkable journey with an early display of academic brilliance. Following in the illustrious footsteps of his older brother, Ben, Charles distinguished himself as the outstanding graduate of Von Steuben High School in 1953. With a near-perfect scholastic record, he was not only class president and National Honor Society president but also an avid photography hobbyist, capturing memories from family trips to Florida, Cuba, and both coasts. It was during these formative years in Chicago that Charles's path first intertwined with Ilene Pavlove, the girl he would meet in grammar school and later marry. His ambition, even then, was clear: to pursue a medical career at the esteemed University of Chicago, a dream he hoped to fulfill without the interruption of military service, unlike his brother.
Charles's aspirations came to fruition when, on June 23, 1957, he married his beloved Ilene Lois Rietman in Chicago. Their union blossomed, and they soon welcomed four sons into their lives: Scott Harvey, Brian Sheldon, Jeffrey Alan, and David Saul. As a graduate of the University of Chicago Medical School, Charles embarked on his distinguished medical career, beginning with service in the U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps in Baltimore, Maryland, during the early 1960s. The family then embarked on a significant move in 1966, relocating to Arcadia, California, marking a new chapter in which Charles continued his vital pulmonary research and clinical work at the renowned City of Hope in Duarte, where he eventually rose to the esteemed position of Executive Medical Director.
Dr. Mittman's dedication to medicine and leadership continued to flourish across California. In 1987, the family moved to Fresno, where Charles served as President of the Central California Faculty Medical Group, overseeing physicians affiliated with the University of California, San Francisco. A few years later, in 1993, he and Ilene settled in La Jolla, where Charles became the Dean for Clinical Affairs at the University of California, San Diego Medical School. He concluded his illustrious professional journey as the Director of Corporate Compliance at UCSD Health Service, leaving an indelible mark on medical education and administration. Beyond his professional achievements, Charles nurtured a passion for travel, a joy he shared generously with Ilene and their growing family, and his award-winning photography graced the pages of newspapers, magazines, and travel books.
Charles "Mitty" Mittman passed away peacefully on September 14, 2021, in La Jolla, California, at the age of 86. His life was a testament to intellect, leadership, and an unwavering commitment to both family and community. He is lovingly remembered by Ilene, his wife of 64 years, his four sons and their wives, seven grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren, all of whom carry forward his legacy of warmth and accomplishment. Together with Ilene, Charles was a devoted supporter of San Diego's philanthropic and cultural communities, leaving behind a profound impact that continues to resonate. His memory remains a beacon of inspiration, cherished by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
