Loretta “Lora” Grigg

CRYSTAL LAKE - Loretta "Lora" Grigg of Crystal Lake died Sunday, March 17, 2002, at Sherman Hospital in Elgin after a brief illness.

She was born Aug. 17, 1919, in Chicago, to Leo Mittman and Eva Wadler Mittman.

She grew up in Rogers Park, where her father had a tailor shop. She graduated from Sullivan High School, where she studied French and Spanish. She graduated from Wright Junior College and completed the secretarial program at the Katharine Gibbs School with distinction. Shortly after the attack on Pearl Harbor, she traveled to Galveston, Texas, to marry Wallace Grigg before he went overseas.

She had a management position at International Auto Parts during the war, then focused on homemaking until her daughter was in school. In the late 1950s, she was secretary to a ward committeeman in Chicago. In the 1960s, she worked for an insurance agency in Lincolnwood. In 1969, she and her husband chose Woodstock as the site of Lora and Wally Grigg Booksellers and remained in business at various locations around the Square until they retired in 1991. Mrs. Grigg did all the purchasing and enjoyed helping customers select children’s books and cookbooks.

After her husband died in 1995, she participated in cultural events through senior clubs in Crystal Lake. She and her husband led the Junior Youth Fellowship at Granville Avenue Methodist Church.

Mrs. Grigg is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Dr. Susan Grigg and the Rev. Justin G. G. Kahn Sr. of Fairbanks, Alaska, and three nieces, Karen Mittman, Sherry Hochstetler, and Christy Emigh of Ohio.

A memorial service will be at a later date.

Memorials may be made to the Woodstock Public Libráry to purchase books for children.
