[1062]Harriet B. Mantell, MDHarriet Baylies Mantell, MD, age 100, passed away on September 28, 2024, at Luther Crest in Allentown, where she resided with her husband of over 76 years, Gerald J. Mantell. She was born in New York City, NY, on April 19, 1924, the daughter of the late Harold Baylies and Celia (Zomback) Baylies. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree and was a member of Phi Beta Kappa from Hunter College in New York City, a Master of Science degree in Genetics from the University of Wisconsin, and an MD degree with Alpha Omega Alpha honors from Northwestern University Medical School in Chicago. She trained in Pediatrics at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and was subsequently certified by the American Board of Pediatrics. She was Chief Pediatrician of the Multiple Handicap Clinic at Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri, and Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at both the University of Kansas Medical School and the University of Missouri School of Medicine. In Allentown, she served as Assistant Superintendent of Clinical Services at Allentown State Hospital, having previously held the positions of Acting Superintendent and Director of the Mental Health Institute for Children.
After retiring, she volunteered for Hospice and Planned Parenthood and served as a consultant for Crippled Children and Retarded Children in Allentown, PA. She volunteered as a Common Ground mediator and tutored immigrant physicians as they qualified to practice in the United States. She believed in secular humanism.
Survivors: Husband Gerald J. Mantell; Sons and daughters-in-law: Joseph and Nan Mantell, of Bridgewater, NJ, Paul and Ann Mantell of Fort Myers, FL, David and Amy Mantell, Rochester, NY, and Daniel and Marcia Mantell of Hanover, MA; 11 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; sister-in-law Marion Waterston and niece Jennifer Wellman of Albuquerque, NM. Predeceased by her only sister, Zoe Baylies.
Memorial Service: Saturday, October 5, 2024, at 2:30 PM in Crest Hall at Luther Crest, 800 Hausman Road, Allentown, PA 18104. A private burial was held at The Green Meadows at Fountain Hill Cemetery in Fountain Hill, PA. Funeral arrangements by the Sell-Herron Funeral Home, Allentown, PA.
