Richard Gewant, SUNY team manager, dies of injuries
HUNTINGTON. L.I. — Richard Gewant, assistant manager for SUNY-Binghamton's basketball team last year, died Friday night at Huntington Hospital. Gewant, 19, who would have been a sophomore this year, never regained consciousness after being hit by a car while riding a bicycle about three months ago.
Gewant, a straight-A student from Huntington, is survived by his father, Ira Gewant, and his mother, Eleanor Sencer, both of Huntington, as well as his sister, Wendy, and brother, Rick. Services are 11 a.m. today at the I.J. Morris Funeral Home in the Huntington suburb of Dix Hills.

In Coma Since June
Huntington — Richard Neal Gewant, 19, of Greenlawn, who had been in a coma since a traffic accident on June 20, died in Huntington Hospital yesterday.
Gewant was born in Brooklyn and moved to Huntington 15 years ago. He was a first-year scholarship student at Harpur College, part of the State University at Binghamton. “He was a kind, gentle, and beautiful human being, said his mother, Eleanor Sencer of 238 Broadway, Greenlawn. His father, Ira, said that Gewant had been riding his bike along Stony Hollow Road in Centerport when he was struck by a car.
Gewant was the manager of the Harpur basketball team and had been the Huntington chess champion and editor of the school newspaper when he attended John Glenn High School in Elwood. Besides his father and mother, he is survived by his stepfather, Roger Sencer; a brother, Frederick, and a sister, Wendy, both living at home in Greenlawn; his paternal grandmother, Celia Gewant of Brooklyn, and his maternal grandparents, Sylvia and Murray Fain of Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Services at 11 AM today at R.J. Morris Funeral Home, Dix Hills — burial in New Montefiore Cemetery, Pinelawn.
