VERNON H. WHITMAN

Vernon H. Whitman, 70, of 207 Monroe St., died at his home Sunday morning. The son of Frank and Margaret Ingram, Whitman was born in Columbus, Ohio, on May 28, 1898. Mr. Whitman had lived here most of his life.

On July 22, 1922, in Chicago, Vernon Whitman married Frieda L. Mittman. He attended the First Church of Christ and was a member of the Masons. Mr. Whitman was the founder and operator of Whitman's Food Market from 1939 until he retired in 1964.

Survivors are two sons, Richard H. Whitman of Muscatine and Thomas L. Whitman of San Juan, Puerto Rico; and one grandson.

He was preceded in death by his wife and his parents. Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday at the George M. Wittich Funeral Home, with burial to follow at Memorial Park Cemetery.

MUSCATINE YOUNG PEOPLE ARE MARRIED IN CHICAGO.

Two well known Muscatine young people, Miss Freda Mittman, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Mittman, West Third Street, and Vernon Whitman, only son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Whitman, 1169 New Hampshire Street, were united in marriage in Chicago, Saturday, according to local relatives who have just received details of the marriage.

The ceremony took place at 4 o’clock at the First Congregational Church in Chicago, with the Rev. Bon Ogden Vogt officiating. Mr. and Mrs. H. Oetzel of Chicago, the latter a sister of the bride, were the attendants.

Mrs. Whitman wore a dress of brown crepe meteor with trimmings of sand-colored crepe de chine.

The couple will go to housekeeping immediately at 743 Oakdale Avenue, Chicago. The groom made his home here until a year ago. Mrs. Whitman has been employed at the Batterson Store for the past year.
