[2998]Arthur MittmanHILLSBORO, Ore. — Arthur Mittman, 80, Hillsboro, died Wednesday, May 14, 2003.
Memorial services are scheduled for 2 p.m. on Wednesday at Central Presbyterian Church in Eugene, Ore. The Donelson, Sewell, and Mathews Mortuary in Hillsboro is handling the arrangements.
Memorials may be made to Central Presbyterian Church, 555 E. 15th St., Eugene, OR 97401, or First Congregational Church, 494 E. Main St., Hillsboro, OR 97124.
Mr. Mittman was born Sept. 9, 1922, on a farm in Muscatine, the son of Walter and Clara Kothe Mittman. He married Marguerite Schmidt.
He served as a lieutenant in the U.S. Army Air Corps and flew B-17s during World War II. For 14 months after his aircraft was shot down, he was a prisoner of war in northern Germany in Stalag Luft 1.
He attended the University of Iowa and graduated with a Bachelor of Science, a Master of Science, and a Ph.D.
He was the director of the exam service at the University of Iowa from 1957 to 1963. During these years, he was also a founder of the ACT program and promoted it nationwide.
In 1963, he and his family moved to Eugene, where he served as a professor of statistics and measurement in the College of Education at the University of Oregon. He retired in 1987. His career included several overseas positions with AID and UNESCO in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia; Kabul, Afghanistan; Colombo, Sri Lanka; and Singapore.
He was an active leader in all the churches to which he belonged.
Survivors include his wife; a son, Tom Mittman of Iowa City; two daughters, Nancy Nichols of Hillsboro and Elizabeth Mittman of East Lansing, Mich.; a sister, Sharon Klein of Spirit Lake; a brother, Wayne Mittman of Muscatine; and six grandsons.
