[3875]VAN ZANDT, 53, DIES SUDDENLYSupervisor-Elect Stricken At Home; Prominent in the Democratic Party.Special to The DemocratMuscatine, Ia., May 27. — Sylvester Van Zandt, 53, Democratic member-elect of the Muscatine County Board of Supervisors, died suddenly in his home, three miles west of Muscatine, on Wednesday afternoon. Mr. Van Zandt had been suffering from a heart ailment for more than a year, but death was sudden. He had been in the garden of his home just before he was stricken.
Mr. Van Zandt, elected last November, was to have taken office in January.
Mr. Van Zandt had spent practically his entire life in Muscatine County. His wife, the former Nellie Mittman, died last September. Two children survive, a son, Harold, and a daughter, Marian, both at home.
Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Friday in the Hoffman funeral home with the Rev. L. C. McDonald, High Prairie Methodist Church, assisted by the Rev. H. W. Slack, Mediapolis, officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery.
Mr. Van Zandt was born Oct. 24, 1883, in Lake Township, and except for a year in Canada, had spent his life in that township. His marriage to Miss Nellie Mittman took place Jan. 12, 1916. Surviving are two children, Harold and Marian; his mother, Mrs. Margaret Van Zandt, Lake Township; and the following brothers and sisters: Mrs. Margaret King, Mrs. Anna Garvin and Allen, Lake Township; Sylvanus, Bloomington; and Edmond, Tucson, Ariz.
