Michael Gene Myer was born Nov. 26, 1943, in Fairbury, Ill., the son of Frank and Marjorie (Bennett) Myer. He attended and graduated from Beardstown (IL) High School and received his B.S. degree in political science from the University of Illinois at Champagne, IL. Michael was united in marriage to Joyce A. Hinrichsen on April 27, 1968, in Muscatine. He had spent most of his working career in advertising/marketing, working for Montgomery Ward in Chicago, AMF Wheel Goods in Oney, Ill., and Ring King in Muscatine. He spent the last 15 years as a personal banker at US Bank in Iowa City. He retired in 2009.

Michael was an active member of the Congregational United Church of Christ, where he worked on many relief missions and work camps in conjunction with another church, First Christian Church in Coralville. He once earned his private pilot license, enjoyed boating with his family, and was a serious tennis buff who played on several leagues over the years. Michael was an avid reader who always looked forward to getting a new book from his son for birthdays and Christmas. He was a dedicated supporter of the Iowa Hawkeyes and was always there for any of his grandchildren's events. For the past several years, he and Joyce looked forward to their annual February trips to Florida.

His family includes his wife, Joyce; their children and spouses, Becky and Bill Hoefer of Coralville and Tom and Julie Myer of North Liberty; two grandchildren, Katie and Ben Hoefer; Michael’s brother, Alan, and his wife, Alice Myer, of Sheboygan, Wis.; and their aunt, Winnie Myer of Normal, Ill.

Michael was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, David Myer.

Michael’s family would like to thank Dr. Feeley and everyone in the hospice unit at Mercy, Iowa City, for their care and support.
