Mr. Clint Mittman, Jr., son of the late Mr. Clint Mittman, Sr. and Mrs. Mollie Vaughn Mittman, was born in Surry County on October 20, 1922. He departed this earthly life on Friday, March 17, 1995, at his home after a lengthy illness.
A graduate of Mount Airy Colored High School, he served as a 1st Sergeant in the U.S. Army during World War II. He received the Unit Citation Ribbon, Luzon Campaign Star, Authorized Good Conduct Ribbon, Southern Philippine Campaign Star, and two Bronze Stars. He retired in 1987 as Assistant Plant Manager of the Quality Mills Shipping and Distribution Center after 47 years of service. Mr. Mittman was the first black member of the Mount Airy City School Board (1975-1984) and was a member of Mallalieu-Jones United Methodist Church.
Surviving are his wife of 48 years, Mrs. Alzona Parker Mittman, of the home. To this union nine children were born: Ms. Judy Marie Mittman of Fort Washington, MD; Mrs. Marjorie (Henry) Baldwin, Mrs. Phyllis (Garland) Gorham, Mrs. Vanessa (Kevin) Thomas, all of Greensboro, NC; Mrs. Glenda Palmer of Mount Airy, NC; two sons, Mr. John (Tina) Mittman and Mr. De Paul (De Carla) Mittman, both of Greensboro, NC; 17 grandchildren, one great-grandchild; two sisters, Ms. Lucille Mittman of Mount Airy and Mrs. Pomona (Coolidge) Hatcher of Harrisburg, PA; four brothers, Mr. Jimmy (Judy) Mittman of Greensboro, NC; Mr. John (Annie Mae) Mittman, Mr. Bobby (Barbara) Mittman and Mr. Benjamin Mittman, all of Mount Airy, NC; nieces, nephews, one brother-in-law, four sisters-in-law, other relatives and a host of friends. He was preceded in death by two children, Ms. Jo Elouise Mittman and Mr. Clint William Mittman.
