Patricia J “Pat” Steck Mittman (1936-2007) - Find a Grave Memorial:
Patricia J. “Pat” Mittman, whose titles included wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, mother-in-law, and sister-in-law, loved “Mimi” best. That’s because that’s what her grandkids called her. They all said their farewells during the weekend before she passed away at the Community Hospital hospice on Sunday night. She was 71. Born in Indianapolis on July 30, 1936, she attended Howe High School and married Richard C. “Dick” Mittman on Jan. 30, 1953.
A long-time auto racing fan, she attended races at the old 16th St. Speedway and became a trophy queen. Later, when her husband was a sports writer for The News, she traveled to the Indy car races with the three children — Randal, Julie, and Rick — in tow. In 1973, she worked for photographer Fred Bailey at the Speedway during May. She loved going to the Daytona 500 and July 4 races there. She became a staunch Dale Earnhardt Sr. fan because “if I were a race driver, I would drive like him.” She collected much Earnhardt memorabilia, which was displayed in her home on the northeast side. Riding around the State Fairgrounds mile dirt track in a stock car driven by Ken Schrader and around the Laguna Seca road course with Desire Wilson were two of her favorite experiences. She also enjoyed cruises and other trips with her husband. She worked in the front office at Marshall High School when her two younger children attended the school.
Julie (married name Gootee) gave birth to the first grandchild, Evelyn Patricia “Evy” Gootee, who is now the mother of two children, Kevin and Elizabeth Daly, and is expecting a third in late December. Rick and wife Jerri are parents of Bailie and Reed, while Randy and wife Michelle are parents of Samuel Aiden. All of them call her Mimi.
Sometimes all at once while she was trying to cook up her traditional Thanksgiving or Christmas Eve dinners, or the birthday special-day dinners she prepared for family members.
A celebration of life will be held from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Washington Park East Funeral Center, with a program slated for 7 p.m. A private graveside service will be held on Friday. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Susan G. Komen For The Cure cancer fund.
